Dads, Separation & Parental Alienation

Family separation can have a significant impact on a father’s identity, wellbeing, relationships and mental health.

In this MANUP? Talk, Professor Ben Hine will explore the realities of fatherhood after separation, including conflict, reduced contact with children and parental alienation, where a child’s relationship with a parent can become damaged or disrupted.

Drawing on research and lived experiences, Ben will look at the psychological impact these experiences can have on men, why some fathers may struggle to talk about what they are going through or seek support, and what can be done to better support families navigating separation.

The session will also explore what parents, practitioners and policymakers can learn from the evidence and how we can better understand the experiences of fathers following family breakdown.

About Professor Ben Hine

Professor Ben Hine is a psychologist, academic and author whose work focuses on parental alienation, family breakdown and the experiences of men and boys.

He leads the Evidence-Based Domestic Abuse Research Network (EBDARN), bringing together researchers across the UK to better understand abuse, alienation and family relationships. Ben is also Chair of the Male Psychology Section of the British Psychological Society and a trustee of The ManKind Initiative.

These sessions are designed to help people better understand some of the issues affecting men, including why men may not talk about what they are experiencing, why they may not seek support, and what those around them can do differently.
